Greetings from Brenda in the "other" Copacabana in Australia. Improvisational piecing is my preferred quilting MO but being part of the Twelve by Twelve project has encouraged me to experiment with a variety of techniques. In fact, despite having once declared that I would never do shibori again, I went on to incorporate shibiori techniques in four of my pieces in the Theme series. This includes Radiance, the lantern-inspired feature quilt in chapter five of the book which looks at the Illumination theme in addition to setting out twelve compelling reasons to blog.
Today's question is: Are you (or were you) inspired to try a new technique from any of the Twelve by Twelve quilts? If so, which one(s)?

Oh yes I am inspired, however I don't quilt. I did eat chocolate after viewing the quilt done in yummy browns. :o)
Thank you for sharing so much...one never knows when quilting will strike my fancy.
I've only made traditional bed quilts before but now all my beds have one(!) I've been drawn to making small modern pieces but with so many ideas it's a case of where to start!
Layering with fabric and paint has really been a wonderful revelation to me, especially in works by Karen, Gerrie, and Deborah.
Specifically, I have used Terry's applique technique. However, each member of the 13's has inspired me at one time or another with either technique, color palette, or subject matter. Thanks!
The list is as long as my arm. I am part of a group who are also challenging ourselves to step outside the square and I have spent considerable time looking at your collective blogs for inspiration.
I too have been inspired by so many of the artists on 12 X 12. Actually I think each challenge taught me something just in the different ways to interpret the same color palette or object.
Each artist brought some technique or inspiration to me it is hard to limit it to just a few.
I would have to say the improvisational piecing is something that I was drawn to and tried and also would like to try Terry's applique technique.
I've used Terry's applique technique several times (thank you, Terry). While I have worked with sheers before, I have not tried Gerrie's little sheer pieces idea yet, but would like to.
I'm feeling excited about trying some improv piecing, and working in a small format. You ladies are inspirational!

Inspired? who couldn't be inspired by some of the pieces that the 12 x 12 group hae produced? I have been so busy following your blog and individual thought processes I haven't had time to select a specific technique to try. the all inspire me.
I have been inspired and have many ideas but have not started yet. I think I am too much of a beginner.

I am inspired by anyone who steps outside the box
Not inspired to try a new technique so much as motivated to work further in shibori.
I recently did some rust dying and your quilt were so inspirational. I also keep wanting to try dying fabric.
The quilts are always inspiring. I think it is the theme and color choices that push me to try something new, but not necessarily a new techniques.
I am so inspired by all of you, both on a personal level and by your accomplishments as artists!
I feel that you have taken an artform that was born of the necessity to keep our families warm, and have stepped into the center ring for all the world to see... Our foremothers would be so proud!

Yes feel inspired to try so many techniques. I'm teaching a discharge bleach dyeing class and 1 of the techniques was with tie dye. AND then here you are with a sample just above. Found some wonderful black material that give varying shades of "rusted and old" browns, so this fold and dip the edges in will work a treat. thanks for the reminder.
The thermofax technique fascinates me and I'd like a closer look at it. Maybe one of the 12x12ers will demonstrate it.
Oregon Judy - I have a post on the thermofax on my blog - http://www.gericondesigns.com/weblog/?p=307
Also, I have done a section in our book about how a thermofax works.
I want to try all of them! What you ladies are doing is very inspiring and exciting!
This isn't really a technique, but I loved Diane's map quilt. I use maps quite a bit in my (paper) collage work and I'd like to incorporate one in a future quilt.
I can't think of any single outstanding technique...I have learned so much from each reveal!
There has been a lot of inspiration but no direct trying of a technique.
