Book Release Celebration!
Introducing Chapter 2: Chocolate & Nikki

Twelve by Twelve Theme Series by Nikki Wheeler
We are so excited about our new book, "Twelve by Twelve: The International Art Quilt Challenge" we couldn't stop our celebration at just one day.  Joining in the party is simple -- every day we will pose a new question about art, quilting, inspiration and community.  Leave us an answer in the comments and you will be entered in a drawing for free copies of our book.  Feel free to come every day, as every comment counts as a separate entry.   The book drawing is closed.  Stay tuned for the winner details.
Chocolate Desire by Nikki Wheeler
Throughout our Theme series we chose a wide variety of topics from concrete objects like "Chair" to abstract ideas like "Identity".  Which of the 12 themes did you like best (or which one did you find most inspiring)? Did you make a quilt from it?

I liked the dandelion best and inspiring, though I never made it into a quilt. Dandelions remember me of my childhood walks through the country fields.

I love ocean dreaming. I am a beach person and this theme is very soothing to me.

Chocolate, of course- dark and bittersweet!!

I made play-along pieces for the dandelion, chair, chocolate, water and identity themes. I really like my identity piece. The chocolate piece was perfect for donating to a Valentine's auction and the water piece was more political than I usually am.

I think my favorite might be the identity series, although I also liked the one with Terry's lanterns and the one with Gerrie's chairs. Hard to pick just one!

Tough choice as all the themes were terrific but I'd pick 'identity' as it immediately takes my mind on a whirl of ideas. The 'twelve' did such a fantastic job of every theme that I have favorite quilts in every category.

My favorite changed frequently and I almost always went back to Dandelion. There is just something magical about it. Each theme had a favored piece for me and I am pleased that it was never the same artist.

I have two favorites--dandelions and chairs. The dandelions would have been a real challenge to develop and create.

Can I choose two??
Dandelion and shelter - I love the ethereal quality of dandelion clocks and I adore houses in any shape or form!

Pick just one?? Well then it would have to be chocolate.. I need my daily fix(dark).. Although I did not make a quilt I did play around quite a bit with this theme as well as many others.

I have just made my first 12 x 12 fiber arts creation for a local art show coming up in May. I felt that the "chairs" theme was my favorite because of the uniqueness of how the chairs were depicted. However I think the most creative was the last theme challenge "12". No two depictions of this theme were even closely related.

I had a hard time choosing just one, so I chose 2 - chairs and illumination. There, I have written it and can't change it! I really liked chocolate, shelter, identity, .....

I loved your water theme, but then they were all really interesting. I never did make any quilt though...

For me Water and Chocolate resonate. I am constantly drawn to water as a theme, especially the sea, and my quilt for FOQ last year included water. I made several journal quilts on the same theme but sadly not as a direct result of 12x12. Congratulations on the publication of the book.

Day two for the book winning. Yay! I am really loving this chocolate 12x12 however now I am really craving the edible version.

Must I pick just one? Each and everyone of the theme series has its own special qualities. However if I had to pick just one, it would be shelter with my favourite in that theme being First Shelter. It made me feel like I was truly inside a cave.

I like the less-tangible themes, like shelter and identity. I haven't made any quilts based on those themes yet, but you've sparked many hours of daydreaming and introspection.

I loved all the themes, so it is hard to pick just one. I loved what you came up with in Dandelion, but thought Chocolate would have been a little more challenging to make it interesting to the viewer. You all succeeded, so I guess I would pick Chocolate.

I also enjoyed all the themes. Stand outs were chair, water, identity and shelter. However, I'll put 1 vote on the abacus for mathematics. Showing my bias!

Every new series was my favorite but if I must choose it was the chairs, really loved Gerrie's. This inspired me to try some abstract work, using printing and stamping.

Again would have to be chocolate. A couple of us loved your quilts and idea so much, we haven't made one .... we've started a whole group here in New Zealand. fantastic work ladies and it always amazes me how with different backgrounds how the art is so cohesive when bought together. thanks and keep up the good work.

I love the word "Illumination" it can be taken in so many ways from the literal of lighting something up to the mind factor of realisation of something. it was the most inspring one for me.

Chocolate and Passion! (good combination!)

Couldn't choose a favourite topic. They are all inspiring in their own ways.

Diane's Dandelion-themed quilt is my overall favorite...so far; but Nikki's Chocolate-themed quilt just blew me away!!! Studying it gave me a major chocolate craving!!!

Most were inspiring but I just love plants and Dandelions are so ethereal. I also love French knots and the two just go together

I enjoyed reading the posts related to the "Community" theme the most. "Chairs" was also a favorite theme, because I have a passion for buying and recovering old chairs.

I loved the mathmatics theme...it was fun to see how everyone would visualize such an abstract concept!

I liked chair the best

Water - many of my pieces are seascapes.
Also Dandelion ,despite trying to eradicate them from my crazy paving
As a botanist I don't do plant quilts on the whole (too much like the day job)

I " Like Water and( for ) chocolate . Hmmmm could be the name of a movie.
So far I haven't created anything from the themes but something is in there percolating :)

Coming from a farming community, I'd have to pick dandelion since they were such a pain. I loved the feeling of airiness.

I loved the brown sage and blue challenge. I think the results were so cohesive as a group and loved that color palette. It is very hard to choose one as they were all exciting
and so artistically interpreted.
