and the Next Theme is ...

Mathematics:
The study of the measurement, properties, and relationships of quantities and sets, using numbers and symbols.

Over the last year I have spent a lot of time thinking about this theme. Ideas have come and gone, but this is the one that has continually stuck. I almost abandoned it thinking it lacked definite visuals or it was too broad. But this is suppose to be a challenge! I have no idea what I am going to do, so I have no advantage over everyone else. So now it's time to explore the other side of our brains.

My first reaction was what? I am outa here. But, I am married to a mathematician so we started brain storming. We have the golden rectangle, the angle of repose, fractals, fibonacci. Ok, I won't quit, but my right brain is in a state of shock. :-}

Uh oh. I'm not sure I HAVE that side of my brain. As far as I can tell it's just an empty space.

Oh, this is not good. I can barely keep up with my fourth grade daughter's homework.

You can always go with simple geometry. Pretty much all traditional quilting relies on math. Or if you really don't have that side of your brain, you could explore the frustration of math. Maybe a very confused and out of sorts quilt. You have two months so don't worry too much.

What a great theme! Certainly a direction I'd never go in by myself, which is one of the great things of challenge topics, don't you think? I was just feeling proud of myself for being able to help my 7th grader with her pre-algebra homework... maybe I'll have to shake the cobwebs off of those old math skills and see what results...

Why is it I immediately think Pi= PIE?!?!

There are a lot of possibilities. Great choice!!

I think a PIE quilt would be quite tasty.

Pie? Yummmm! I hated Algebra because you had to accept so many things as "given." I did much better with geometry because I could see why things worked. (Good thing I faked my way through algebra enough to get to the geometry that explained it. Same thing with algebra II and trig. I bolted off to art school before anyone made me take calculus! OK, now how to express that in a quilt....

Calculus? But that's what I liked best in mathematics...

Based on everything else I've seen, y'all should have no problem creating magic out of math. I really enjoy peeping in here once in a while and seeing what the talented people are up to.
Can't wait to see more!

My husband, who is a former math teacher, saw the new theme before I did and his eyes lit up! My first reaction was "Uh oh". Then in the middle of dinner I had a sudden inspiration and think I know just where I am going with this!

And BTW, my first discarded thought was "Pie are round, cornbread are square." Silly old, old joke.

The possibilities are infinite! (LOL)

How cool to have maths as the theme - I'll be back to watch these maths themed quilts.
