Terri's Dandelion

12x12 dandelion quilt
Ferocious Dan

When we found out our theme was 'dandelion', I didn't know immediately what I would make. I enjoyed looking at many dandelion photos, and wondered if I'd make a dandelion while still in it's bright yellow stage, or if I'd make a dandelion after it was all fluffed up.

I entertained a few scenarios in my head and all of a sudden a light bulb came on and I immediately knew what I wanted to do. I have so much fun watching my cats romp and play outside that sometimes I think they resemble miniature lions in the jungle.

I drew and painted the main design on fabric and appliquéd it to the background. I then dyed some Lutradur with Dye-Na-Flow. I cut out graduating round shapes and cut petal shapes into them. I attached those to the background and added in some fiber for the dandelion centers. The two large dandelions are three dimensional. In the upper area of the background I free-motion stitched some dandelion flower shapes.

Dan is quite ferociuos, isn't he ;-). I'd love to see the 3-D Lutradur dandelions in real life -- I bet they're quite wonderful. Maybe you could post a detail picture of one if you get a chance. Fun interpretation of teh theme.

Dan in a jungle of dandelions... What a great idea! And a beautiful quilt.
Yes, I would love to see details too.

Terri, I really like the black and white border, it frames the piece perfectly

Oh, Terri, I love this whimsy of this. What a great image to capture! The dandelions have a great simplicity -- but detail too -- you've hit a good balance. And I love how you've framed the image. I'd never have thought of doing that and it's perfect. I really love this piece.

This is delightful. I especially love the inner border with the ethereal sky above it. Very nice composition. I wish we could click on these to see a larger version! I'll check your blog.

I like the clarity of this quilt and the way that the wild dandelions refuse to be contained in the postcard like image of the cat. Can you post a little tutorial on how to work with Lutrador as I have heard of it but don't know what it is.

Terri, he's gorgeous! The black and white inner border was a stroke of genius, it makes for a very tight composition and I love the quilted flowers, too.

Ferocious Dan just looks so sweet! It looks like you have trained him to weed.

What a great composition - that inner border really shows that we need not be constrained by the overall 12x12 size. I can see this image (and story) being snapped up by a children's book publisher. Remember us when Ferocious Dan is famous!
