When we found out our theme was 'dandelion', I didn't know immediately what I would make. I enjoyed looking at many dandelion photos, and wondered if I'd make a dandelion while still in it's bright yellow stage, or if I'd make a dandelion after it was all fluffed up.
I entertained a few scenarios in my head and all of a sudden a light bulb came on and I immediately knew what I wanted to do. I have so much fun watching my cats romp and play outside that sometimes I think they resemble miniature lions in the jungle.
I drew and painted the main design on fabric and appliquéd it to the background. I then dyed some Lutradur with Dye-Na-Flow. I cut out graduating round shapes and cut petal shapes into them. I attached those to the background and added in some fiber for the dandelion centers. The two large dandelions are three dimensional. In the upper area of the background I free-motion stitched some dandelion flower shapes.
Dan is quite ferociuos, isn't he ;-). I'd love to see the 3-D Lutradur dandelions in real life -- I bet they're quite wonderful. Maybe you could post a detail picture of one if you get a chance. Fun interpretation of teh theme.
ReplyDeleteDan in a jungle of dandelions... What a great idea! And a beautiful quilt.
ReplyDeleteYes, I would love to see details too.
Details are on my blog... http://stegart.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteTerri, I really like the black and white border, it frames the piece perfectly
ReplyDeleteOh, Terri, I love this whimsy of this. What a great image to capture! The dandelions have a great simplicity -- but detail too -- you've hit a good balance. And I love how you've framed the image. I'd never have thought of doing that and it's perfect. I really love this piece.
ReplyDeleteThis is delightful. I especially love the inner border with the ethereal sky above it. Very nice composition. I wish we could click on these to see a larger version! I'll check your blog.
ReplyDeleteI like the clarity of this quilt and the way that the wild dandelions refuse to be contained in the postcard like image of the cat. Can you post a little tutorial on how to work with Lutrador as I have heard of it but don't know what it is.
ReplyDeleteTerri, he's gorgeous! The black and white inner border was a stroke of genius, it makes for a very tight composition and I love the quilted flowers, too.
ReplyDeleteFerocious Dan just looks so sweet! It looks like you have trained him to weed.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great composition - that inner border really shows that we need not be constrained by the overall 12x12 size. I can see this image (and story) being snapped up by a children's book publisher. Remember us when Ferocious Dan is famous!
