Sunset Tide

A few weeks ago, I was sitting beside an estuary in Wales on a nice and quiet evening. The tide was out and there was an almost perfect symmetry between the far away mountain and the shape of the foreground rock. I did a quick little sketch because I knew I had to make a quilt out of this.
Back home, I did more sketches, simplifying the landscape until I was happy with it. This became my Spice quilt.More pictures on my blog.

Francoise,i so enjoy that this is an unexpected palette for the subject matter! And the waterline stitching is a gorgeous detail.

I love the shapes and lines that you have created. I often sit and admire the shape of landsapes at dusk and this is familiar. That stitching in the lower quadrant is a wonderful addition.

I really like that you have taken a batch of colors that typically define excitement and you've used them in a way that creates a very serene sense. As usual, your shapes and lines and abstraction is just perfect. And I love the colors of stitching on the beach part -- wonderful use of thread there.

I agree with Diane, you were able to take hot colors and make them serene. Your triangle shapes add so much interest to this piece.

Yes! The almost, but not quite, reflection of the mountains in the shape of the waterline is wonderful and actually dynamic considering the overall peaceful look of the piece. The hand stitching adds just the right amount of detail.

So beautifully balanced and composed. I love this just as much if it is rotated 90 degrees. It then becomes, not a landscape, but a composition of lines and angles that is equally beautiful. As others have said, it, like most of your work still has that very serene, peaceful mood to it, despite the hot colors.

It’s no secret I’m always smitten by your work. There’s always so much calmness and serenity in it, even with spicy colours!

Such lovely gradation of hue and shape. I'd love to see your original sketches. It really does feel like a "sunset tide." Or very desert-like.
