You Might Want to Sit Down...

Are you ready to hear the theme for our next challenge?

Chairs.

I sure wish I could invite you all over to my home and we could pull up a bunch of chairs around the table and just gab, laugh, share, eat, ponder and chat. But since that's not possible, I'd like us to make quilts about chairs (or just one chair) for our next challenge.

I'm not sure what it is about chairs, but I think they are so interesting and full of design possibilities. I've had this theme in mind for months. I think we've had an interesting variety of themes from literal to abstract and some of us interpret literal themes in abstracts ways as well as the opposite. I'm so eager to see what you all do with this.

It seems chairs are a bit trendy in the design world. The United States Postal Service even issued some stamps including chairs designed by Eames. We took a trip to the Dallas Museum of Art last week and I saw this poster in the gift shop.

I could go on and on, but I won't influence your ideas! I hope you curl up with a hot cuppa in your favorite chair as you ponder this theme.

I love it! And, strangely, I've been sketching chair ideas for some time now, wanting to work on this subject. So it's timely and perfect -- and appropriate as we enter the busy holiday season. It'll remind us to sit and rest and think!

Oh yeah! I have had chairs on my mind as well. I also have a thing about chairs. I once did a painting of many, many chairs for a charity auction. I was working in a furniture store at the time.

I love the miniatures of the mid-century modern chairs. http://www.miniaturechairs.com/MiniatureChairs/chairs.asp I would so love to own that collection. I don't have the money to indulge myself. I also love our dining room chairs, from a design by Charles Renny MacIntosh. They are very graphic and linear in design. I think this will be fun.

Hmmm - how to get a social comment story out of chairs? I am sure is it possible. I just need to sit quietly in one for a while to get the feel of it....!

We had a Wassily chair when I was growing up, and now I'm seeing them all over the place again and remembering the first house I grew up in. Odd how just a chair can take you back to a place or feeling. Looking for a picture of the chair, I found this site: http://www.designmuseum.org/exhibitions/online/a-century-of-chairs/1920s. Fun, fun, fun! Right now I have way too many chairs as I bought a new set, but haven't gotten rid of the old. I wonder if I could work with that...

Hmm. A shibori chair? Now there's a challenge!

Brenda: I think an over stuffed arm chair covered in shibori would be divine!!

Helen, you might remember that the word "chair" has another meaning aside from furniture--some political/social possible in that one. I also flashed on "the seat of power". Hmmmmm.

And Helen, being the Queen of Quiltland, should know all about thrones...

Helen: I have the perfect social comment chair - at least here in the USA - the electric chair! Good topic for a lawyer, don't you think?
