Brunswick Street

I apologise, everyone, that I am cutting and pasting this post from my blog because today I am sick and can hardly think straight enough to write anything fresh! When I am well again, I'll come back and visit your quilts and comment.

Remember how I managed to be a month early for my Twelve by Twelve challenge? I'm still amazed by that, but...

TA DAH!!

Here it is.

The theme was "Community" and even though it's a huge cliche to see a community as a tree, the more I thought about this theme the more meaningful that tree image became to me. We have moved quite often and the communities that I have been a part of that have meant the most to me and that I have enjoyed the most have been the ones where every individual is valued and appreciated for who they are. I love to be in communities where every leaf is different and there are a few nuts growing amongst them! In February I visited Melbourne and met up with some bloggers ( Hi Crafty! Hi Stomper!) for dinner in Brunswick Street. It must be one of the best places in the whole world! While we were sitting there talking I watched out of the window as people walked by - Harajuku-styled kids, an old guy on a bicycle who was a dead ringer for Robert Winston, tattooed chicks in leathers and, later, as we walked along the street, a middle-aged transsexual in a really bad blonde wig sat reading the paper.

I love your tree, Kirsten -- sorry to hear you are sick but it turned out very lucky that you finished so early! This is a stunning tree and I like your concept very much. (I also think you chose a great background fabric -- subtle but interesting.)

Hope you feel better soon!

I like your commentary and it really makes your piece that much more meaningful. It looks like every leaf is different yet they are all held together by the branches, a good interpretation of the theme

I find tree of life themed quilts most evocative and this is no exception. Your choice of brightly coloured fabrics for the leaves and those wonderful curves make me smile every time I look at it.

What a gorgeous tree! For all the diversity in the leaves, it holds together and makes a whole greater than the individual parts. If only all communities could be this fabulous.

I totally love every single thing about this piece, including the wonderful word picture of Brunswick Street! The tree may be a cliche, but it still works wonderfully and your clean, bright design is something i want to look at for a long time.

Not a cliche - a metaphor. I really love this. I LOVE trees and considered doing one myself, but it would not have been this gorgeous. You have captured the diversity of a community.

I love the tree with all the bright color leaves and flowers. My daughters don't want me to scroll away from it! Your community is so full of energy and life. I love the feeling and that is what I would like to be a part of! How to find that in suburban/rural America is the challenge.

Wonderful quilt and I hope you feel better soon.

I just love it! I also find trees so inspiring and this is a stunning interpretation. It's much brighter and more joyful than some of our other community quilts. Refreshing. And a beautiful balance to our work as a group.
