This piece reflects my passion for lines and stripes. A dance of intimacy with a scorching palette. In a nod to popular culture, the quilt name is inspired by an episode of Brothers & Sisters where Sarah enjoyed a storeroom tryst with a hot temp hispanic accountant - Cal.
When I made Simple String Theory in the lead up to the Mathematics theme, I knew that it would become a series - Desire Lines. Caliente is the second work in that series. I gather that "caliente" has shades of meaning in Spanish. That seems entirely appropriate as "passion" has a range of meanings too.
After dyeing up a storm of reds and oranges, I ended up using a red batik I already had in my stash for the background (that's OK - I have a passion for batiks). And in a wonderful dash of serendipity, I found that the red Cotton Mako Aurifil thread, kindly sent to me by Alex of Aurifil Threads, toned in perfectly. The fine 50weight thread quilted up beautifully and I could get passionate about that too.

Oh, sigh--my favorite color is red and this is so wonderfully red! Just the color evokes passion, but the sinuous lines make it very provocative. I can almost hear the opening lines of Ravel's "Bolero".
Ah, now here's the red hot passion I assumed would dominate this challenge! Your sinuous lines are so sexy -- I'm definitely with Terry hearing Bolero. Your quilt and Terry's Frida are the two that scream out "Passion" to me without any sort of explanation. (OK, well Deborah's and my flowers are pretty straightforward too, but for completely different (botanical) reasons)
Definitely a signature Brenda piece. The linear forms are very sensual and the colors are passionate.
I remain in awe at how you achieve so much in such a simple way. I want to touch the ridges in this piece and I can certainly learn so much for observing your style. If I saw this in a gallery I would not be moving away for quite some time.
I love Brothers and Sisters -- that was a hot scene!
The colors and lines are beautiful! That one blue curve is such a perfect contrast. You've done a beautiful job with the quilting, too.
Very sexy indeed :)
And very beautiful. Brenda, this is my favourite of your quilts so far (we probably shouldn't have favourites but there you go). Terry is right. I hear the Bolero too!
The blue line is perfectly placed, exactly where it should be.
This is beautiful and I just love the colors. I find that the gentle curves and the stitching keep my eyes roving around. So lovely Brenda!
You do have a wonderful way with lines, Brenda! It's a wonderful response to the theme, and the "hot" color and sinuous lines really do evoke a slow but passionate experience! Your stitching is fabulous too, as usual!
Brenda,
Very original approach to red and to "Passion".
A true showcase of your passion for design and marriage with colour, shape, line. I love your richness of colour with the simplicity of sinuous lines. This little quilt reflects a slow burning passion that serves to underpin solid strength. Well done Brenda.
This one just takes my breath away! I LOVE it!
Very hot and sexy. You have captured Passion!
Who would think lines could be so passionate, but they really are in this piece. It makes me want to dance!
Great! So hot! And I love the quilting very much.
