As one of just five Twelves whose name was drawn to select a 2012 theme, I found coming up with a suitably engaging theme word something of a challenge in itself.
Ever helpful, my husband kept suggesting I go with US aircraft carriers but I thought that Deborah (with a naval pilot husband) might have an unfair advantage.
When a certain M theme emerged with the first three challenges, I thought it would be fun to continue in this vein (although I was free to choose any word(s) I liked). And so I mulled over the M section of the dictionary and landed upon...maverick.
Whether you focus on a person, or an event, a moment in time or some other tack, I hope this theme raises lots of possibilities (once you get over the initial panic?).

Oh my. Speaking of navy pilots, this is the first thing I think of when I hear "Maverick."

Ha, ha. I had momentarily forgotten about the Top Gun connection.
That's funny, the first thing I thought of was James Garner -- for the non-Americans among us, there was an old western tv series years ago called Maverick where he played a cardsharp who got into and out of trouble in clever ways. You can rest assured that I won't be doing a portrait of him for my piece!
It's another challenging theme, Brenda! (I guess with your illness we should be grateful you didn't choose Mucous or Meningitis!)
The first thing I think of is Sarah Palin, but I'll get over that!
Oh, you're making me laugh (which makes me cough). Hopefully some other, more quilteorthy?, non-conformists or maverick conduct will come to mind later. I do have a back up M word if required.
The Sarah Palin thing came to me, too, but I have always been the maverick in my family so I feel a kinship with that word.
Oyyyy
Is that your final answer??? Yikes! This will definitely take some thinking.
Ok, I had to reach for my harraps dictionary!.. I only knew there once was a movie by that name.
Now, I will think 'anti-conformist' instead of 'maverick', that will be much easier, hopefully.
Mel Gibson...steamboats and the soundtrack with one of the best versions of Amazing Grace ever...I have no idea what my quilt will be but at least I know what music will be playing as I make it!
Me too!! You could totally win brownie points with both your hubby and the Laundry King for the Navy pilot/aircraft carrier version of Maverick! :-)
Like.
I love James Garner, but I'm of the Rockford Files era, rather than Maverick. As for the other M words -- ewwwwww!
Google Maverick Quilter/Quilts. I see that lots of quilters have co-opted the term maverick. There is a Maverick Blog Ring - by invitation only - there web page says: Definition: Mav·er·ick n. One that refuses to abide by the dictates of or resists adherence to a group; a dissenter. adj. Being independent in thought and action or exhibiting such independence:
maverick politicians; a maverick decision; Maverick Quilters!
Ha! It also says: We are Quilters-Gone-Maverick but we are *NOT* necessarily Art Quilters.
So what really IS a Maverick Quilter, and what makes a Quilt Maverick?
ha. Can my maverick quilt be 20/15?!
Oh good grief! I've just had an idea pop into my head....already!!!
Hello there
Very informative. Thanks for the great idea!
I really appreciated it very much.
Just getting caught up after a busy weekend. I'm with Deborah and immediately went to Top Gun. I actually was just showing my oldest that picture the other night when we were talking about teen heartthrobs. Sadly, she thought all my tween loves were "old fashioned."
