Topping Off or Topping Out

In building construction, topping out, or topping off, is a ceremony held when the last beam is placed at the top of a building. The term may also refer to the overall completion of the building's structure. A topping out ceremony is usually held to commemorate the event. Here on the Twelve by Twelve blog we are celebrating by inviting our readers to leave a comment before 5pm on 15 October to go into a draw for some of our special notecards. You might also like to vote in our poll to nominate your favourite collaborative art quilt mosaic so far (see the sidebar).

Now all of our shelter-themed quilts have been unveiled, I have compiled the collaborative art quilt mosaic:

I always get a thrill to see how our quilts come together in the mosaics. In the Community mosaic, you will recall how Kristin and Gerrie's quilt both featured a similar cross motif. Then in the Illumination mosaic, Gerrie's pears were echoed by Terri's lightbulb. This time, the shape of Diane's cave doorway and Karen's Lost City could almost be the positive/negative of one another (how spooky is that!) while Gerrie and Nikki are channelling orange. What do you see?

PS: Don't miss out on seeing what others have to say. Here is the link for the comments feed on this blog.

I've just found your site and I wanted to say how nice it is. You are a talented group! I like all the finished pieces but what I really like the way you all show your inspirations along the way. Its interesting to see the different interpretations. Goes to show that while we might think we speak a common language we obviously dont! If I have a favorite quilt - its the Two Snails on a Tree if for no other reason than it made me smile!
Well done.

What an awesome display of creativity. Observing the continually expanding creativity of each artist with the progression of challenges is such a treat. I am grateful that this group allows me to watch them as they push their creative boundaries. I appreciate that "virtual space" allows me to see this exhibit, but I would love to see these works in "real space".

Fascinating work....it's so interesting how you all can pack a lot in the small format of 12x12. The cave piece caught my eye immediately and the similarilty between that and the one below is striking.

I really like the feature of being able to look at each artist's group of quilts as a mosaic. It is so interesting to watch the development in style, colors and feeling of each quilt. I am so glad you are sharing this experiment with all of us.

As a newish quilt artist, it is such a blessing to be able to see and watch all your minds at work as you develop ideas on your themes. Thanks for sharing your process with us!

Someday it would be fun for you to have a specific "Play At Home" theme where all us lurkers would be encouraged to complete something, too. Then maybe the "cloud of witnesses" pieces could be auctioned off for a charity.

I found the 12x12 through a sort of bloggish six-degrees-of-separation, and I'm so glad! Y'all's work is both lovely and inspirational. I was looking for a visual kick-in-the-pants -- I've definitely found it here!! I'm looking forward to seeing the Mathematics project when ready.
