Chartreuse Makes Me Happy

I really enjoyed playing with chartreuse silk fabric. I think this square in a square piece illustrates how nicely chartreuse works with almost any other color. I am not really happy with the way these colors photographed so I may need to do it again tomorrow in daylight. I drew a grid of various sizes of square in a square that would fit into a 12 inch square and then fused the pieces in place and machine stitched.

Here is a detail.

The piece below is the first one that I did. It is a riff on a Paul Klee painting. I thought it needed something more so I added the x's with some dangling threads for texture.

Here is a detail.

So, now we need to decide which one goes into the final Twelve by Twelve mosaic. What do you think?

  1. The square in a square really catches my eye. If it were me I would choose that one.

  2. For some reason, the first one is more appealing to me, and you are right about chartreause going with everything.

  3. I think the top one, even though the bottom's colors are more my palette. Judging from the 2 or 3 other reveals I've seen, yours will truly capture the eye!

  4. Love 'em both but oh! That first one just sings to me!

  5. I agree- the first with the squares just sings -- all those vibrant colors looking great and yet it's the chartreuse that stars. The X's ar fun and I like the palette too but the squares make me want to go back and keep looking.

  6. The squares for sure! The one with the Xs looks a bit forced to me, while the colors and activity in the square-in-a-square piece are so much more exuberant and "you!"

  7. OMG!! I love the bright colors against the chartreuse. I thought of Josef Albers work with color as soon as I saw your quilt. Have you seen this? http://bit.ly/fEIob5

  10. I love the square in a square quilt!!! All those fun colors are so much more colorful, it seems, when paired with the chartreuse. The "x" quilt is very lovely too but I'm much more drawn to the more colorful quilt.

  11. Definitely the squares for me, too. I got all excited just seeing it on my screen let alone in real life!
That rare thing - a quilt I would hang on my wall :)

  12. Another great example of chartreuse playing well with others. Both quilts, actually!

I love the variety of greens in your square in a square, plus the variety of sizes of the motif. So fun!

I love the color palette in the Xs one also. It's going to be so interesting to see our mosaic this time around!

  13. The first one is really pretty and bright and happy! It would work really well as a repeating pattern--you could have yardage printed! I like the second one nearly as well and would like it with fewer of the Xes.

  15. Great square in a square quilt Gerrie. You are right, chartreuse is working well with so many colours.
I like your other quilt too but I don't think I would have added the X's.
