Sound and Vision

This quilt was exquisite in my head! It hasn't lived up to my expectations but I like it anyway. I wanted to make a gray background and quilt it with strong colours to show how wonderfully gray makes other colours zingy. Hmmm.
The background began life as a photo of my ear. Heavily pixellated it became...well...nothing really! The sound waves are quilting lines and it would be amazing to be able to say that they are actually my voice... but I can't ;)
The bright wave is a very beautiful hand-dyed silk floss.

  1. Brownie points for an excellent concept. I also applaud your variety of greys, but perhaps that contrast of warm, cool, light and dark was just too much for the colorful silk floss. I still very much like your intentions.

  2. Oh, there you are!! You have found an interesting variety of grays - more to the bluish side. I am wondering how you went from gray to your ear? LOL I love a grid so this is very appealing to me. I like how you have arranged the values. And the stitching of the sound waves is great,

  3. I think I would like this as well without the colors. Your pixilated grays are wonderful and the addition of the polka dot pieces is perfect.

  5. Well, first of all I am glad to know that I am not the only one who can fall in love with a concept in my head only to be disappointed in the execution. That said, though, I think this is wonderful! I too love your variety of grays and the pixel look --- and while the sound wave doesn't jump out aa dramatically as you might have thought it would, it creates a surprise of color when you look closer at the piece.

  6. I thought that looked like an ear....LOL, just teasing! I like the skinny line of zingy color, and I agree with Terry, the touches of dotty fabric add lots of interest.

  7. The Laundry King suggested that an old-fashioned B&W television test pattern would make a good gray quilt but your sound wave idea is even more inspired. The pixellated background creates an interesting effect, especially when you squint, and the colour and quilting detail draws you in.
