Labikeet
I did not have an easy time getting started with these colors. While I work with bright colors often and have a lot of them in my stash, this assortment of colors had me stuck. I had lots of ideas and looked at a lot of lorikeet pictures, I just couldn't land on anything that struck me. Funny how naming a color palette by the "thing" with those colors parks my mind on that thing!
But at some point, while looking at the wonderful markings on lorikeets (I sure do love Google Images), I thought "I wonder what other animals would look like if they had these colors." That sparked my imagination, and it was an easy decision to turn our Lab/Weimaraner Gemma mix into a "Labikeet."
I took Gemma's picture (I was waving a treat just out of the frame, hence the intent gaze). I recently got Susan Carlson's "Serendipity Quilts," which details her loose "free cutting" version of fabric collage images, and inspired by that I set out to superimpose those lorikeet colors onto Gemma.
This was trickier than I thought it would be -- especially getting the eyes to look halfway decent -- but I had a lot of fun doing it. Carlson's process involves gluing (not fusing) bits of fabric down, and then trapping then all under tulle. I guess I'm not as liberal with the glue as this process requires, because I struggled with pieces moving around a bit under the tulle as I started to quilt. But I'm very happy with the result. Check over on my blog for more details about the process and in -progress photos.
Gemma was dozing at my feet during most of the construction process ... not terribly excited about being immortalized in fabric as a Labikeet, perhaps, or maybe just exhausted by the burden of being my model!
What a great idea!! I love the fabrics that you used. Gemma looks very elegant in lorikeet colors!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the portrait of your dog. It doesn't matter in which colors it is done, it is full of life. You did succeed in making the eyes! I need to get that second book from Susan Carlson. But my first thought when I saw your quilt was of Pauline Salzman's portraits of her Weimaraners. You are in good company.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Extremely well done.
A dog lover Twelve by Twelve lurker for a long time!

How clever Diane! I love it. Now you've got me wondering how my cats would look in this color theme. Great job!!!
ReplyDeleteI love Susan Carlson's work. I connected with her several times when we lived in Maine. Your labikeet is fantastic! I love her. The free motion quilting really emphasizes the feeling of fur and gives her such a nice shape.
ReplyDeleteGemma looks great in bright colors. It seems to match what we hear of her personality. Wouldn't it be fun to do a whole series of normally drab-colored animals in bright lorikeet colors!?
ReplyDeleteThose eyes are soulful Diane, you did a great job, and the flowers in the lower right are perfect.
ReplyDeletethe title got my attention as i love creating new words...but the quilt is lovely and fun to look at.
ReplyDeleteI think Gemma looks a little embarrassed by her makeover, though at the same time interested in our reaction! I love this piece. So playful and at the same time a wonderfully affectionate interpretation of a beloved pet. Very clever and beautifully executed Diane!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this dog!!!! So clever and beautiful and well done. Yay!

Wonderful execution Diane! You've nailed the value and I love the whimsical flower detail on the shoulder. Does Gemma let you tie daisy chains around her neck too?
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet puppy! Her eyes are perfect! I would love to go play with her in the back yard.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had thought of this, Diane! It's so cool! I have long been a Susan Carlson fan.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love the dog! The colors are so vibrant and strong. Love this palette.
