The dark blue sign is my somewhat free interpretation of the Chinese characters meaning "twelve". All fabrics are hand dyed.
The twelve little red shapes represent the members of the 12x12 art quilt group, scattered around the world, eight in the USA, two in Australia, one in England, and one in Belgium. There are also 12 cross stitches, they're almost connected.
And I added twelve tiny beads all together in the upper right corner. Quilters tend to love these little embellishments. I first thought of adding a small embellishment to each red rectangle, but after all, I liked them plain and simple as they were.
I've posted more detail pictures on my blog.
Francoise, This is so meaningful to what we are doing as a group. You are carrying on your use of pure colors and it is just beautiful
ReplyDeleteFrancoise, this is wonderful -- I love the immediate graphic quality of this -- it has a simplicity, but as you look, you see more detail in the stitching and embellishment. Lots of levels of surprises! I like the symbolism, too. I see many of us were celebrating our joint venture in fabric!
ReplyDeleteAh, serene, beautiful. Isn't it lovely how the squares scatter like we are scattered? The design seems random until you read the text, then the meaning comes through beautifully.
ReplyDeleteI love the red rectangles too and how they are located in the same way we are. You always manage a simple elegance with your work Françoise, and this is no exception. You've incorporated your love of all things asian well too.
ReplyDeleteI knew this quilt was yours the first time I saw it. It has your famous hand dyed colors. I like how you portrayed us as squares, not that we are...LOL! And I like how you placed them to show our locations.
ReplyDeleteAs I said on Francoise's blog - her pieces are very calming and zen like for me. You can take an idea or theme and distill it down to the simplest of shapes and stitches that relate a story or an idea, completely. I think your montage will be so gorgeous. Can't wait to see them all together.
ReplyDeleteWhen I look at this again it seems to read 12 + =
ReplyDeleteI wondrer if this is a hint of all we have to come in the future?
Helen, I love your interpretation! I have a strong sense of expectation as we head toward the next chapter of our project.
ReplyDeleteFrancoise, your quilt has such serenity. The balance is so calm. I could stare at it for hours quite happily!
I love the colors and the symbolism. A beautiful piece of art.
ReplyDeleteI love it -- so simple and so meaningful! I like how we all come together with the beads. I'm looking forward to that day!
ReplyDeleteI really like the simplicity and clarity of this piece and the inclusion of red representing luck in chinese
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. Your style is so spare and elegant. More than any of us, I think your 12 quilts have a stunning cohesiveness.
