I am so happy to let you know that we have self-published a book documenting our Colorplay Project!

If you've been following along with us, you'll remember that our journey started in 2007 with our Theme Series—a little online challenge that turned out so well that it became a book, published in 2011. In 2009 we took on our second challenge project and called it "Colorplay". Every two months we each created a 12 inch square art quilt using the color scheme proposed for that round, by one of us. Two years later we had created 144 little Colorplay quilts. We found that project challenging in a whole new way—the Theme project was all about stories and had a strong narrative component. Colorplay was all about the color and it's visual impact! When we exhibited both sets at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, I think we realized how stunning this group of quilts really was.

We decided among ourselves that our first book had told our story and another book of its kind wasn't in the cards, but a smaller book of the Colorplay quilts would be something we could do on our own. I agreed to put it all together. Without deadlines and an editor to push, the project languished, but later, rather than sooner, it finally came to be and is out there! All 144 quilts are included along with the artists' comments.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Where have I been -- definitely not doing the art thing. Being a twelve was so inspiring creatively and the timeline forced me to be focused. Art was a priority in my life and my family's lives because of these wonderful women. Since our last challenge the demands of family have drove me (literally about 500 miles a week) in different directions. My four kids are busy playing sports. I'm working full time with my husband at his engineering firm. Since his partner decided to retire at the beginning of the year, we are now full owners and have the joys and challenges of owning our own business. Most days I go to bed very tired. We do have plenty of fun and excitement though.

We have been working on renovations and using it more like a vacation home even though it is just on the other side of town from our old house. We wanted to move in permanently, but 1200 square feet with four tween and teenagers is a little challenging.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">While mowing the lawn last spring I had the brilliant idea to buy the little 1922 bungalow next door that has been for sale for several years. We took possession last month. After a crazy month of ripping out 60's wallpaper and old carpet, painting and repairs, we are now living in two houses. Its a little unconventional. Everyone sleeps in our first house, but we use the other house for the living spaces and the two extra bathrooms. And I once again have a studio. I claimed the upstairs bedroom that looks over the water for my own. I am still very much moving in, but one day soon I will be creating again. Plus it is like Christmas rediscovering all my supplies.

Hi All! Sometimes when I think back on my involvement with this group, it sort of seems like a dream. Did I actually make all those quilts and participate? Well I did and I have the quilts to prove it. It is all a wonderful memory and it will always have a special place in me. I'm so fortunate to have been able to participate with this great group of talented artists and I cherish their friendship.
In the time since, I have been keeping busy. I am still very creative and make art quilts, although not quite as many. I have, recently, (like some of the others here) been making more traditional quilts. Some of these are on the modern side and some are improvisational piecing, which I really enjoy.
While I've always enjoyed working with mixed media and fabrics, it seems I have become even more enamored with my desire to create my own fabrics. I love designing and took an online course on surface pattern design. I have become more involved with screen printing and stenciling and creating fabrics to use in my quilts and other projects. I have designed several stencil designs for StencilGirl Products and I have several other stencil designs that I sell in my Etsy shop. Most recently I have been teaching myself how to create my own silk screens and screen print fabric yardage.

I don't post a lot on my own blog anymore. I am finding it much easier and convenient to share what I'm doing on Instagram and Facebook. When I'm not busy with my creative activities, I enjoy spending time with my family. My grandkids bring me a lot of enjoyment. My granddaughter just turned 4 and my grandson is not yet 2. I still have my cats. They are aging now and a couple of them have developed some health issues. I still live in North Dakota, where it seems like nothing exciting, "quilt-wise", ever happens. Thanks to all of you who have followed along on this journey. I feel so blessed to have been a part of it.

Greetings from the Serendipity Studio at Copacabana. This was the outlook this morning:

On the design wall, I have some studies and samples for my Lines of Beauty workshop as I work on refining some teaching notes. I am really looking forward to teaching an expanded, 4-day version of this class at Grampian Textures retreat in March 2017:

On the workbench, I have fabrics sorted for my next project. I feel a dyeing day coming on. More purples are required!
On the studio floor is a half-packed suitcase for my trip to Adelaide next week. A selection of my works will be on display at the Festival of Quilts Morphettville Racecourse, Adelaide from 30 September - 2 October 2016 (open 10am-4pm daily).
On the spare bed, two large new works are rolled up, ready and waiting for an appropriate time to be revealed to the world (note the pink Diane!):

And next to my TV chair, is a project made from luscious wool felt. Stitching has such transformative power:
the bigger picture
When we wound up our final cycle of group challenges on 12/12/12, I embarked upon a personal challenge to deeply explore certain themes and motifs first arising in my Twelve by Twelve works. In particular, I was keen to concentrate on working in a larger format.
I look back to the Twelve by Twelve years and marvel at the number of works that I produced - not just the official contributions but the scores of other small studies I made along the way. No doubt our collaborative project was a great stimulus along with regular deadlines and group accountability. Moving to working in a larger format brings new challenges: physical - handling large works is taxing; engineering - corralling all those small pieces on the design wall; and, of course, time - especially when you stitch works as intensively I do.

a matter of time

The notion of time is intriguing and sometimes paradoxical. It is at
once rigid and fluid, fleeting and interminable, tangible but elusive,
and abundant yet scarce. How the ‘fourth dimension’ of time is
observed, manifested and experienced is at the heart of my latest curatorial project - a matter of time. This is a travelling exhibition of 32 works each measuring 100x40cm. Deborah Boschert's work Rising and Setting is pictured below second from the left:
Being a Twelve has had an enduring impact on my creative practice. I am so grateful to Diane for inviting me to play and for the support, encouragement and enthusiasm of the other Twelves. Where am I now? That's the question I was told to answer for this blog series. But you know me. Rebel to the last.... I think the most interesting question actually is: how did you get where you are today? Because today has been a day I would not have imagined last time I posted here ( which was February 2014, with this post.
I started the day out on the golf course. Not what you expected? No, me neither, but read on and I'll explain. Then I packed up some of the art from a solo show I did at the View Two Gallery in Liverpool in May and popped it in the car to take to the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery third ( and for me the final) show with the Etcetera Group. Whilst at the gallery I talked to the curator and agreed to do a little mini show of six more of my pieces later this year. then I got in the car again and drove to talk to a different gallery owner about a proposal for a duo show with another artist. then I came home to deal with a contact for representation by a second Liverpool gallery. None of that was even in my imagination in February 2014!

So what happened?

When the Twelve by Twelve Project ended, I was a person who still had a great deal of difficultly believing my myself as an artist. I wanted the group environment because it gave me an identity/ If they were artists and I was a member then I must be an artist. Identification by Association if you like. I was only just finding my voice - if you look back the 20/12 series shows a big leap in how my work looked and was when my current voice started as a tiny exploratory whisper. But in the intervening years I have done a lot of coaching and Masterclass Work with Lisa Call on redefining myself in my own mind and coming out boldly as an artist and I have dome that so much I almost don't recognise myself now!

Last year I had just done the first Etcetera show which hung in the Platform gallery in Clitheroe and had sold art work from that show for the first time. I was yearning to be an artist not just within what I perceived as the 'safe environment of the quilt world where I was known and accepted, but in the wider art work and also by people in my day job. But boy was I scared. Some of that was due to the peculiar constraints what is and is not acceptable in my day job. and I was worried about crossing boundaries when I wasn't sure where the boundaries lay. But far more was that I was scared people would pity me. That they would say whisper, behind my back, that I was the person who thought I was good enough to be an artist and I didn't even know I wasn't. Scared I would be the Florence Foster Jenkins of the textile art world!

And then I had an Idea. Its a long story ( which you can read here) but it involved a charity project with other artist/barristers called Artists-in -Law and it required me to stay up in conference rooms full of colleagues and actually say the words "I am an artist'. Effectively I leapt out of the closet and once out I just had to keep going because saying I was an artist and not being very good was better in my mind than saying I was one and not actually producing any art! Plus I didn't catch anyone sniggering at me. So I put some of my art on sale and people bought it. For real money.
At that stage I was playing around with the beginnings of my graffiti based work. the first quilt in that series went to the SAQA Wide Horizons IV juried show and I was playing with adding paper collages over graffiti backgrounds to make Liverpool scenes, which turned out to be commercially popular but not quite where my soul was. I was still stretching, trying to find the real me.

In December 2104 I went on a city break to Berlin with my family to celebrate my Dad's seventieth Birthday. Now I love my family but really, we all needed some respite from each other, so the deal was that we all got to do one thing alone if we wished. I chose to go on a walking tour of graffiti in the old East Berlin. I took photos every step of the way, finding huge inspiration in the overlap of tags. The close up photos of the edges of other peoples art seemed to me to create new, unintended pieces of abstract art. The tour ended in an abandoned margarine factory where we were given an A4 piece of canvas and access to spray cans. My mind went into overdrive and I called the tour guide over and explained, with the aid of pictures of my quilts on the iPhone exactly why I needed much much, more canvas and much much more information about spray can suppliers! That night I usde the hotels wifi to shop online at a Graffiti supply shop back home. (Who knew such places even existed!)

On my return home, I made a quilt in my old style and then took the cans and spray painted it. I maintain it is interesting but truly ugly but others clearly went with just the interesting as it was juried into the European Quit Triennial. That quilt was called Note to Self and it contained both readable (just) and disguised messages to myself about being bold and having belief in myself. It was the first thing I made that felt to me like something no-one else was doing (probably for very good reason!) and its acceptance gave me huge confidence. Months before I had been talking with my coach about the artists I looked up to and I made made a list of them in my journal because I had been reading an about the power of physically writing down goals and aspirations and dreams. When I got the list of participating artists in that show, all bar one on my list were in that show and the missing one was a juror!

Then one day I was at work and I decided to go for a little lunch time stroll. I remembered that someone had told me about a gallery I had not heard of before so I went to try and find it. It was open and I climbed up many flights of stairs to find the top room and found the owner. We got chatting, he asked to see my work, he liked it, he asked me to give him three pieces for a Christmas show and I nearly fell down all these stairs again with joy and shock. I had, entirely by accident obtained gallery representation! Email correspondence followed and within the week we had agreed that I would have the whole room - 100 feet - for a solo show which I called Urban Scrawl. I maintain that that only happened because of all the work with Lisa to get me to a point where I could both say those words : I am an artist and here is my portfolio" and actually have a portfolio on my phone!

I had four and a half months to prepare for that show and, as most of the work I did have I either deemed unsuitable or had committed to Etcetera shows, I had to start from scratch. My husband (who we call Thirteen because of his role in selling the Twelve by Twelve book some time ago at Festival of Quilts) was a star in supporting me by feeding me on my arrival home from the day job and sending me up to the studio to work. You can read some blog posts about the preparation and the work in the show on my blog at www.helenconwaydesign.com. It was the intense work put in for that show that helped me finally, finally (finally!) make art I was proud of and actually would hang in my own home! The preview night was heaving with people and I sold seventeen pieces, most to the very people I had at first been afraid to tell I was an artist in case they laughed at me.

Again, the work I had done on the Masterclass and reading other artists blogs on subjects such as setting up studio systems, publicity, how to present myself on social media and the like played a huge part in that show. I used to have a keyring that said; behind every successful woman is a pile of washing and ironing. That remains true but I also want one which says: Behind every artist is a legion of fellow artists who have gone before and are generous with their experiences.

Empty Street - Urban Scrawl Show

Once the show was over I decided, pretty much on a whim, to learn to play golf. I had tried at the instigation of a dear, golf obsessed friend about 20 years ago and was dreadful. Really, humiliatingly bad. So I had spent 20 years defining myself as someone who was not sporty. Someone who couldn't even though I wanted to. However, the process of redefining myself as an artist allowed me to see that I could refine myself as a golfer if I wished. So I took lessons and joined a club and now I am a baby beginning golfer (and loving it and improving quickly) much as I was a baby beginning art quilter when Twelve by Twelve started off my art career.

So the short answer to the questions are:

Where are you now?
Deeper in in the art world than I ever thought possible when I started making log cabin quits. Exploring more graffiti based ideas, contemplating moving those ideas into encaustics as well as textiles. Making what I want to make even if its unconventional or I think people wont 'get it'. working on showing in art galleries where there are no other textile artists. Trying hard to balance time in the studio with time on the golf course and time at the day job.

How did you get there?
By other people believing in me and taking a chance on me before I did that for myself. And learning overcome fear of people laughing at me, of being a beginner. That started with the day Diane Perin emailed to ask if I wanted to join an art quilt group. I remember telling my husband and he asked, a little confused, "Do you make art quilts?' "I do now," I said. and so I did. I still have fears of being the Great Pretender but I like the line at the end of the Florence Forster Jenkins Movie: "They may say I couldn't sing, but no one can say I didn't sing."

They may not like my art but no one can say I am not now an artist.
Karen RipsI would say that the nine years since I was invited to join Twelve by
Twelve have been more artistically rewarding than I could ever have
imagined. Through the experimental pieces I made with the group
challenges, I have found the art I love to make and have been very
successful in exhibiting my work around the country. My collaboration
with Paula Chung in A View Within is currently on exhibition at Houston
Center for Contemporary Craft, Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts, and
Schmidt Art Center. A new piece from my 3-D series on Loss
will also be in this year's World of Threads in Oakville, Canada. My continuing friendships with
the other Twelves are very important to me.
Halfway through our Theme Series, my family and I moved to Hawai'i. And then during our 20x12 Series, we moved to Virginia. As of one year ago, we've joined two other Twelves, Terry and Gerrie, in Portland, Oregon. They may not have been the primary reason our family chose to settle Portland, but our connection was definitely a factor. The friendships made because of Twelve by Twelve have been lasting and true, and it pleases me to no end to have finally settled down near family -- not just the biologic kind, but my quilt-mom and quilt-aunt who I found through the magic of our amazing online adventure.

There is no doubt that my different environments have informed my work, and as Twelve by Twelve was a large part of my artwork for five years, it's been interesting to see the changing influences over that period of time.

In Virginia, I had the good fortune to become a member of McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, where I enjoyed several years of attending a weekly life drawing group and where I was able to realize the goal formed several years prior of showing my Army wife series of art quilts and other domestic textiles in a gallery setting.
Just after moving across country to Oregon, and purchasing our very first house, I finished up a work that I had started in Virginia, and am proud to say that it was accepted into the joint SAQA/Textile Museum show Tales of Migration, which has just closed, but enjoyed many months of positive attention and press both in the DC area and in broader reaching publications. My piece, Home is Where The Army Sends Us is about creating community wherever you go.

Since this piece however, I have been focusing my creative energies on our fixer-upper house. It's been deck build overseeing, bathroom tiling, and lots and lots of painting for the last twelve months. I also took on a part time job at my local quilt shop, The Pine Needle, to help pay for the home renovations. It's been that and so much more, as the job has connected me with many local quilters, and given me the opportunity to sew samples, write patterns, and begin to teach a class or two. Being at the Pine Needle has reignited my love for more utilitarian bed quilts, but there will always be art just below the surface.

Yes, I'm still blogging... from time to time...
When the last Twelve by Twelve series ended, I must admit that it felt pretty strange. A bit unreal, a little too quiet... There was even a feeling of emptiness sometimes, although we were still in contact by email.
Anyway, at first, I decided to try and use up all the little scraps of fabrics I had dyed for our challenges.
I made lots of small art quilts. I showed some of them on my blog. Others were never finished, and of course I could never use up all those scraps.
I also decided I wanted to spend more time drawing and painting.

About 4 years ago, I had bought a new weaving loom. With the end of the Twelve by Twelve challenges, I also had more time to experiment with this beautiful toy.
Awfully time consuming, and completely different from quilting, but absolutely enjoyable!

I am still making art quilts of course, dyeing and printing my fabrics, and sewing mainly by machine as before.
Some time ago, I started a new group with a few quilting friends from Belgium. We meet every other month, and at the moment we are working with themes, making two quilts for each theme.
Here are two quilts I made for this group...

I spend lots of time playing with my grandchildren. My older granddaughter is already a very talented artist. Here she was painting with different ocres I bought in the South of France.

And I still love to take pictures, mainly of nature,
at home...

and when I travel...

And, as I'm very stubborn, I carry on studying Japanese, making rather slow progress but still enjoying it very much.

This is all for today!

I still have to meet a few of my Twelve by Twelve fellows in person.
How about organizing a meeting for our 10th anniversary?
Where am I, nine years in?—right where I was the last time you heard from me, just west of Portland, in my little studio in the woods.

We built the studio in 2011 and I spend most of my days out there. It has a small loft with a comfy futon for guests. Brenda was the first Twelve to stay here, followed by Diane and then both Kristin and her husband Art stayed with us while they house-hunted just before their move to Portland. So the studio has an additional life as the Twelve by Twelve B&B!
I continue to make art quilts. Several years ago I began using the fabrics from men's shirts purchased at thrift stores and over dyed to achieve the colors I wanted. The plaids and stripes suggested architectural elements to me and I made many works using the shirt fabrics to create memories of our travels in South America and Mexico.

This piece, "Basilica of Quito" was recently accepted for our local High Fiber Diet group exhibit. I have continued to use these fabrics in other work that is not architectural in theme as well.

"Cloth Remembers" has been traveling with the SAQA International exhibit Redirecting the Ordinary.
Recently I was intrigued by an idea to use only stripes, and made "Roses". It will be in an exhibit of art by Oregon artists in all media in October.
Travel continues to inspire most of my work. "Camas Prairie, Idaho" one of the pieces inspired by last year's USA road trip, is now part of the SAQA Concrete and Grasslands show.
My grandchildren live nearby and we spend many happy hours together. I even get them involved in a few crafty fiber projects!
My blog continues, but posts are fewer and farther between these days. I have had the pleasure of writing regularly for the beautiful online magazine, Through our Hands, the brainchild of the wonderful Laura Kemshall and amazing Annabel Rainbow. I will soon be sworn in as president of our terrific local fiber arts guild, so I have the next year laid out for me.
Though the Twelve by Twelve projects have come to an end, our very special group will always be a part of my life and brings me such joy when things like Kristin's move to Portland, and Helen's and Deborah's visits happen! We came together by way of the Internet, and by that same means we stay together and continue to share our lives. Face to face visits happen as well. My visit with Diane last winter was lovely. We made books and talked for hours. Someday I will meet Kirsten and Francoise face to face, and a beautiful circle will be complete.
It is still thrilling to me to remember how our our "little" online collaboration became so much more, including, unbelievably, a book. A couple years ago I took on the project of designing and preparing a second, smaller book of our Colorplay quilts, which will be available on Amazon. Watch for an announcement soon!
Thanks to all who have followed along on the journey. You've not heard the last from us...
It will be obvious that I'm really rusty - the formatting is all over the place and, after three hours of fiddling, I've given up trying to fix it :)

In the midst of Twelve by Twelve, I opened a small quilt and craft shop in Townsville, North Queensland, Australia where we were living. The shop was great fun and it was interesting to be involved in a different facet of the quilting industry. But after three years of living The Shop it was time for a change and, on the spur of the moment, one Friday, I decided to close the business. By Saturday of the following week the shop was completely bare and I found myself packing up my life once more to go with Peter to a small mining town in Western Queensland where we stayed for nine months.

At the end of that project, Peter mentioned that he was interested in going to Christchurch, New Zealand. He didn’t have to say it twice! I am from New Zealand and I was very keen to move back there. Christchurch experienced two very large earthquakes in 2010-11 and the city is still in the midst of extensive re-building. For a civil/structural engineer it is an exciting place to be but also a place where he feels that he can genuinely contribute to community needs. I had never lived in the South Island of New Zealand before and was a little surprised that after only a few days in Christchurch I felt that I had found my true home and now I never want to leave this beautiful region. It is a spectacular part of the world.

Although we thought that we would be living alone for the first time in thirty years, that didn’t actually happen and our two children (now in their mid-twenties) are living with us, as is our daughter’s fiancé. I’m going to be the Mother of the Bride in May 2017! Additionally, my sister moved here a few months after we did and soon after, had a third daughter, so for the past 20 months I have been caring for her baby girl a few days a week. This little one is such a joy!
Peter works from his office in our house, so he also enjoys having the baby wander in to see him several times a day.

What about sewing? Well, after I closed the shop I must admit that my passion for sewing had left the building! For more than twenty years of my life I had scarcely had a day when I didn’t use my sewing machine so it was a shock for both of us when it remained untouched for over a year! Instead I began knitting, crocheting and spinning.

Slowly, my interest in sewing returned and for the first time in my life I found myself
really enjoying hand sewing. I even made a hand-pieced AND hand-quilted quilt
for the very first time ever, in 2015. I currently have a half-done La
Passacaglia, an appliqued medallion quilt in progress and a huge box of basted
hexagons for paper piecing at some point.
after we arrived in Christchurch I bought an Elna Grasshopper and sewing on
this old machine suited my new desire for slow stitching. It has also gradually
re-enthused me for machine sewing and my two latest projects have been machine
made.

All of my
projects are now very much in the category of Nest Feathering! I make things
that I think are beautiful and that I want to have in my home. My interest in
making art quilts is kind of minimal. The appeal of quilting for me was always
about the blend of beauty and usefulness and I take great pleasure in making
useful objects.

I am still
teaching from time to time and still enjoy that very much. Quilters are
extraordinary people and I love the company and inspiration of creative makers.
Quilting still feeds my soul!

Within a
week of our move here, we had the most wonderful visit from Karen and Ted. They
felt like old, old friends even though it was our first meeting. Out of all the
Twelves, I have still only met Karen and Brenda. I would dearly love to meet
the other Twelves. These women mean so much to me! I was heartbroken to not be
able to be in Houston with the others when our book was released. When Diane
started our group none of us imagined where it would lead us and the impact it would
have on our lives.

These days I no longer blog. My online activities are primarily to stay in touch with my family and close friends, who
are spread far and wide. From time to time I wonder about starting a new blog…
who knows? My days are filled with my family and friends, our crazy busy
household which often includes a visitor or two, making whatever has stirred my
creative soul and daydreaming about our goal of building a house in the country.kirstenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11458267354320757761noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4519632209878236029.post-9353624015482250972016-09-06T04:00:00.002-07:002016-09-06T04:00:04.263-07:00An Update from GerrieIt has been some time since the Twelves checked in with our readers. I hope you are still out there. Mr C and I sold our big house with my big, fantastic studio. I have my sewing machine at home in our multi-purpose room (it is also the TV room and guest bedroom). I have a small studio a mile from home where I do all my messy stuff. The thing I miss most is a big design wall so I have been imited as to the size of work I do.

I also had a serious knee problem last year which resulted in knee replacement surgery in May. I am still in recovery mode so it has been almost a year since I have had the energy and ability to work for long periods of time. I am so looking forward to getting back in the studio.

Here are some examples of what I have done, recently. I was honored
to be featured in John Hopper's Inspirational online magazine. I was one
of the textile artists that he feature on his blog- The Textile Blog.
He had us show some of our recent work. This is the cover of my Ode to a Tree quilt using my hand dyed fabrics. I pieced the letters that spell our tree. This was juried into the Oregon SAQA show.
I hope you are enjoying this chance to catch up with the Twelves. Being part of this amazing group of women has been a highlight of my artistic life. I am especially thrilled to see the growth and success for our younger members, Deborah, Helen and Kristin. Deborah has a book! Helen has had an exciting solo show! Kristin has a quilt in Quilt National. I am so proud of them - kind of like a quilt mom.

I flew to Portland just a couple of weeks ago especially to meet Helen, but also because Kristin, Gerrie and Terry live there. We had a fabulous get together. It's pretty cool to have five of the twelve of us in one place. Now I just need to get to New Zealand to meet Kirsty.

My "lorikeet" quilt has been in my mind a lot over the past year or so.

I've continued to explore the ladder as a personal symbol. This is Evening Climb, also 12x12.

Remember us?! It's been a long time since we last posted on this blog, but as today -- September 4 -- is exactly 9 years since we first posted on this blog, we thought an update was in order. Brenda had the idea of our posting about what we've been doing since we ended our collaborative quilt adventure, and we agreed that each of us would take a day and tell you what we have been up to.

One thing is for sure: what started as a small, personal art challenge turned into something that took us places we never imagined we'd go. It brought us new friendships, amazing opportunities, and such fun adventures as we watched (and occasionally followed) our quilts as they traveled around the world.

So the rosy glow of our 5-year adventure still makes me smile, with pleasure and real gratitude.

For me, the last 3 and a half years since we finished our challenges have seen quite a few changes. My art quilt making has slowed considerably (I'm going to maintain that it hasn't ground to a halt -- I'm just taking a break. A long break.) I'm not sure why my interest turned to making contemporary traditional quilts and modern quilts, but it did. And I'd had fun, making quilts for no particular reason. Here's one I finished recently, made from selvedges I've been saving over quite a few years:

I have also taken a bit of detour into drawing and painting, which continues to be a surprise and a pleasure. I've taken a load of online classes, mainly to make myself have to paint regularly. And I've found, as many of the teachers have promised, that the simple act of painting every day really has made me better. Most recently, I took a great class from an idol, Roz Stendahl, on drawing life creatures from life -- which meant a month of drawing people and animals. Great fun, and I think it did get me past the anxiety of drawing things that insist on moving.

I also looped back to an old passion for handmade books and started making them again which was like reconnecting with an old friend after many years. I got so involved making them that I started up an Etsy shop (Dizzy Dog Creations) where I add books for sale from time to time. My books aren't traditional -- I call them "jumbly journals," in a sort of crazy quilt/collage style mix of papers and contents that some people call junk journals. They are fun to make and I go through periods where I make books obsessively. I've made a few commissions too, which has been great fun. You can watch a video flip through of a travel journal here if you are interested!

During these last few years, I started judging quilt shows which has been very fun. It probably sounds corny, but I consider it a true privilege to be trusted with the task of looking at the quilt someone has slaved over with love and passion and so much time, and I take the responsibility of providing feedback very seriously. I especially love judging art quilts, and educating quilt guilds and show-runners about the importance of judging art quilts on art principles and not just on the technical parts of quilt making.

In my personal life, I've seen a fair number of changes. My sweet dog Gemma (who was my model for the "Lorikeet" challenge in the color challenge series) succumbed to back problems about 18 months ago. She was such a lovely dog, but it was time to let her go. For the longest time, I found an odd consolation in the bits of dog hair I seemed to find around the house no matter how well I cleaned!

After about a year and a half of dog-free living, I decided that I was ready to add a new member to the family -- an adorable English Cream golden retriever puppy named Starlie. (I figured another black dog would be too much a reminder of Gemma, so I went in the direction of a white dog.) She is just 12 weeks old as I write this, and is a total sweetheart. She's also hysterically funny in that floppy goofy way that puppies have. I feel like the mom of a toddler again, so I'm spending a lot of time on the floor and out in the backyard chasing an endlessly energetic little creature. Not much art time right now!

My daughter Caroline, who was 11 when we started, is now just a few months' shy of 21. She's grown into a lovely young woman, with quick humor, sharp intelligence, and real gifts with art and with animals.

My marriage also ended in this interim period. Many of you have gone though a divorce, and know the odd ups and downs and emotions that seem to pop up at unexpected moments. But life as a single woman feels very, very good, and I'm feeling a strong sense of peace and hope for what lies ahead.

I continue to stay connected to the Twelves. Just two weeks ago, I had Helen and her husband Dennis (known as Thirteen after his labors on our behalf when our quilts were at the Festive of Quilts in Birmingham some years back) as guests in my home. I've also had very fun visits with Terry (who came to Sonoma County where we talked endlessly and made books together), with Gerrie when I was up in Portland a while back, and with Brenda when she was in California visiting her husband's family. I know my paths will cross with the other Twelves one of these days, and I am particularly determined to meet Kirsten eventually.

So that's what's up with me.
My Twelve by Twelve Colorplay quilts arrived home this week, after a long period of traveling the world without me. Do they have stories to tell! Gemma, the "Labikeet" quilt made for the "lorikeet color" challenge chosen by Brenda Smith, loved being on display in Belgium this past October. Apparently the quilters in Belgium are not used to seeing such vividly colored dogs and were highly amused.

My "Wisteria" quilt (made when Gerrie Congdon chose chartreuse as her color challenge) had tales of the oohs and ahs it overheard while on display in Alsace, France this past September. I also got a long, involved story Kiluea overheard about a scandal involving a french quilter, her new sewing machine, and the rabidly jealous old machine who was intent on sabotaging things in the studio. Those French sewing machines are hot-blooded, I guess.

The "Kiluea" quilt (made for the Kiluea-inspired challenge that Kristin LaFlamme chose when she was living in Hawaii) enjoyed seeing Michigan, Portland, Oregon, and Iowa back in the summer and fall of 2013. Kiluea claims that she didn't find many volcanic friends in those areas but was surprised that Michigan in August was hotter than she expected.

The "Birds Flying High" (made in response to Francoise Jamart's blue and white challenge) quilt loved seeing Australia and New Zealand in early 2013 and truly felt that they'd flown far, far from home. They continue to chatter among themselves in their newly-adopted Australian accents. You'd think they'd have brought me a souvenir or two, wouldn't you? But no.

My #2 Pencils (made in response to the "purple and yellow" challenge chosen by Karen Rips) are still blushing and swooning about meeting Chris Howell of Midsomer Quilting in Chilcompton, England. Chris is quite the charmer and his enthusiastic love of the 12x12 quilts has made him a favorite among my quilts. I think a few of them wanted to stay there with him and his many quilting fans. I expect they'll be sending off pining love letters now.

The "Imagine" quilt (made for the "orange" challenge selected by Terry Grant), is most sentimental about its time touring the International Quilt Festival shows in Houston, TX, Cincinnati, OH, and Long Beach, CA. It reports that it felt like a real star with the flocks of admiring quilters touring the full 12x12 exhibit of all 288 quilts, and was glad to have sunglasses with all of the paparazzi taking photos. I think returning to my quiet house is going to be quite the let-down for this spoiled celebrity quilt.

And the others? They're not talking.

Maybe they're tired and jetlagged.

Or they're sulking about having to leave their Colorplay friends.

The "Spices" quilt seems to be in a particularly dark mood.

Perhaps it's depression, given that the bright lights of their glory days have come to an end.

You never know, I tell them. And besides, I remind them of what amazing doors they opened for me and my dear 12x12 compatriots. What a wonderful, wonderful life they've had. Now, I think I need to find a place in my home where we can get reacquainted, just me and them.
Especially for our princess lorikeet, here's a picture taken this morning a bit before the opening. :-)

We had about 500 visitors today, which is rather good for a Thursday, I think.
Some people knew already about the group and the Colorplay series, and there were a few real Twelve by Twelve fans among them! Most visitors were interested to hear about our story and had lots of interesting questions to ask. I think I talked almost non-stop from 10am to 5pm. Now I need a little rest.
More pictures tomorrow.
However, "la cerise sur le gâteau" is to finally meet Françoise after 8 years of internet exchanges and seven years of collaboration with Twelve by Twelve projects. Here we are together at a SAQA function.
